Mental Health Interpreting Pilot
We frequently hear from Mental Health professionals who have had very poor experiences of working with an interpreter. Our response has been to try to address this by training and establishing a pool of interpreters with an understanding of:
Mental Health issues and terminology
The ways of working therapeutically as a triad rather than as a dyad
The extent, limitations and professional boundaries of their role
The nature of therapeutic change
Their relationship with the Mental Health professional
The Mental Health Interpreting Pilot enables clients to have access to appropriately trained interpreters and so experience equity of access to Mental Health services. Access to a trained pool of interpreters ensures that there is consistency of the interpreter being used for a series of consultations with individual clients.

As a result, clinicians and interpreters are more confident about working together and provide a much more effective service for clients, for whom, otherwise there would be no opportunity to access help in this way.
The pilot runs from October 5th 2009 to April 2nd 2010 and interpreters are available Tuesday to Fridays 12.30-2.30pm offering the following languages:
Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, Portuguese, Polish, Arabic, Farsi.
If you would like to book an interpreter please use the booking form. Please call on 01189 576393 if you need any details or information. Also please find the referral process to help you and a copy of the Codes of Practice that we ask all practitioners who use the service, and our interpreters to read and sign.
