Supporting us
Mothertongue is a registered charity and is thus dependent on donated income.

Mothertongue aims to provide culturally sensitive counselling and practical support services to vulnerable and socially excluded people from BME communities in Reading. To do this Mothertongue has to bear the costs of providing counselling and practical support to enable its clients to move towards independent living and put their lives back together again.

Mothertongue saw four hundred and twenty one people last year for counselling, practical support, group sessions and training.

This year Mothertongue is able to deliver almost 1000 hours of counselling and over 700 hours of practical support in addition to group sessions and other client based activities.

Providing such support is labour-intensive, as many clients require high levels of support.

Your donation will really make a difference.

How your donations make a difference
Some funders/donors have chosen to fund our work in a broad way, encompassing the organisation as a whole, while others give donations for a specific project or purpose.

At present we are running the following projects:
  • Culturally Sensitive Counselling
  • Practical Support through Volunteers
  • Cross-Cultural Parent Groups
  • Arts and Crafts Groups to bring different people together
  • Basic English lessons
Examples of how donations have directly supported Mothertongue and the people we work with:

  • Mothertongue received £90 from Reading Dispensary Trust to pay for a client's glasses. As an asylum seeker on food vouchers, the client had no means of paying for the glasses, which she desperately needed. The donation from Reading Dispensary Trust was invaluable to her. It truly shows that even the smallest donation can have a big impact on someone's life
  • £100 donated from Sri Sathya Sai for a bed for a client
  • Childcare costs donated by Greens Girls Foundation so a client could finish her training
  • The Green Girls Foundation funded set-up costs so one client could start her nursing course
  • Free violin lessons were donated by Social Services Leaving Care to a young Iraqi asylum seeker and an instrument was loaned by Berkshire Maestros
